A Davidson Lake Association Board of Directors’ Meeting was held on September 18, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at the Dumfries Fire Hall.
Review of Minutes
Andy moved that the minutes from both the July 17th Board of Directors’ meeting and the August 27th General Annual Meeting be approved as distributed. Don seconded the motion.
Review of the Annual General Meeting
New Director – We have one new director, Brian Hayden. Shyanne Pangburn will be leaving as she is moving away from the lake. It was decided that we will continue with the current number of directors until our next AGM.
Rumble Strips – The subject of noise caused by the rumble strips on the highway was brought up at the AGM. Andy will send an email to Norman Clouston, District Transportation Engineer, to find out what the policy is.
Water Testing – Arnie accompanied Dept. of Environment staff when they went out to perform water quality tests on the lake. Tests were performed at 5 locations on the lake – one at Sandy Cove, another half-way up the lake, one at the far end, one on the sand bar, and one at the deepest part of the lake (26’). They looked for algae and they did find some and they took water samples to be tested at the lab. They noted that the temperature of the water is colder in the deep water and contains more oxygen. This is necessary for trout to survive but bass are able to live in poorer conditions. It may take some time, but a report on the results should be forthcoming. They did say that our lake is in good shape, however there are 2 or 3 lakes within the province that have had their water go bad. It is interesting to note that one of the reasons we were able to have this testing done is due to the fact that we have formed a lake association. As well, one advantage of becoming part of a lake association coalition would be to enable us to share water testing equipment.
Successes
Ken noted that we have had a number of successes since we formed the association:
- Neighbourhood Watch is up and running.
- We have our own website.
- The tower light has been fixed.
- 2 road committees & the support of the Local Service District of Dumfries in getting our grading and hopefully a new snowplow contract this year.
Memberships
A discussion took place as to how best inform people about our association as there are still some that are not aware that it even exists. It was felt that the best time to approach people would be in the spring as many cottages are now closed up for the season. We also want to ensure that no one is being overlooked. One way to help achieve this would be to have an inventory of everyone on the lake and one suggestion was to put together a directory, similar to one they have compiled at Harvey Lake. Arnie will try to get a copy for our next meeting. Our website also is a good tool to get information out to people.
Prospective projects:
Website
- History – It had been the intention of the Board to gather some history of the lake along with some old photos. This has not yet been done but we think we should still go ahead by interviewing some of the seniors who could share some stories about the lake. Ken suggested that we add a spot on the website entitled “Stories Around the Lake”.
- Events – The website is a good place to inform people about upcoming community events.
- Pictures – Ken encouraged folks to use the website to display photos taken on and around the lake.
The Trail
- Ken talked about reviving the old trail around the lake. The trail used to be used a lot more frequently than at present as it has become grown up and there are a lot of dead falls in the way.
Other Business
- Wayne stated that he is having problems trying to get work done from a couple of contractors. He is waiting to have work done on culverts as well as to have some gravel delivered.
- Wayne has contacted Gerard Daley for a copy of the snowplow contract and is trying to arrange for some grading to be done.
- Steven had a copy of the contract for last year which stated that there is an option to extend the current contract for up to one more year and we do not know if that provision has been enacted.
Next Directors’ Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dumfries Fire Hall.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:35 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Janet Morton
